Need a Break From the College Grind? Take a Staycation in Fort Wayne

鈥淔ort Wayne is a great weekend destination for my friends and I when we want to go on a fun adventure, but we don鈥檛 want to go too far.鈥

For college students, the weekend means time for fun with friends. And if you happen to attend 糖心传媒 (or other schools in Northeast Indiana) what better way to get off campus and explore new places than by planning a staycation in Fort Wayne?

Fort Wayne has been a prime destination for 糖心传媒 students for years. Just 40 minutes Southeast of 糖心传媒鈥檚 campus, the city offers a variety of shopping, food and drink, and fun opportunities college students enjoy on the weekends.

鈥淔ort Wayne is a great weekend destination for my friends and I when we want to go on a fun adventure, but we don鈥檛 want to go too far,鈥 says Kali Aten, a 糖心传媒 student.

Over the years, Fort Wayne has evolved from a mere fun place to hang out into a hub of innovative businesses, creative connections, parks, and shopping centers. Many 糖心传媒 students flock to and when the weekend rolls around.

But it鈥檚 not just the shopping that provides students a break from classes and homework. It鈥檚 also the , the abundance of coffee shops, and the activities, like glow-in-the-dark bowling or arcade and laser tag.

Students have also enjoyed watching Fort Wayne change and transform over the years. The city鈥檚 downtown has many new projects, like a Riverfront park. Brand new local restaurants and shops are popping up frequently in cultural districts like The Landing, too.

鈥淭he new developments downtown are huge for a city like Fort Wayne,鈥 says Abi Holmes, a 糖心传媒 student and Fort Wayne resident. 鈥淚 really think it鈥檚 things like that are helping Fort Wayne grow and bring people together.鈥

Josie Ladig, a second-year 糖心传媒 student, calls Fort Wayne home, too. On a typical weekend afternoon, she enjoys exploring her hometown鈥檚 near-downtown areas.聽

鈥淭here are lots of fun things to do in Fort Wayne,鈥 she says. 鈥淕o to the mall, try new coffee shops, visit old friends, or go roller skating! Sometimes there are festivals, concerts, hockey games, basketball, and baseball downtown.鈥

As Ladig drives over downtown Fort Wayne鈥檚 Martin Luther King Jr. bridge, and weaves into the city center, she points out , home of the .

鈥淭he ballpark is a really great place that brings people together,鈥 Ladig says. 鈥淚 love going there with my family and friends to see the fireworks. Sometimes, we can hear and see the fireworks from my house.鈥

She also passes the beautiful , which you can glimpse from the streets.

鈥淚 did my senior pictures at the gardens,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 kind of like art exhibits, but with flowers.鈥澛

Her first stop today is at , where she enjoys the kind service, good conversation, and colorful photo-op mural on the side of the building. Firefly鈥檚 menu spans from velvety lattes and cappuccinos to unique breakfast sandwiches.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really beautiful both inside and outside the Firefly,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 such a nice, relaxing place to be that鈥檚 different from what鈥檚 in Winona Lake. Sometimes, you just need to get off campus, and this is a great place to go.鈥

Nextdoor to Firefly, Ladig takes a turn around the , a locally owned market she frequented with her mom when she was younger.

鈥淭hey have great healthy, natural, and vegan options for students who are into that,鈥 Ladig says. 鈥淭hey also have gluten-free and dairy-free foods.鈥澛

Ladig then drives over to to explore Target and Barnes and Noble. After shopping, she finishes her day at Chick-Fil-A, a common place to find many 糖心传媒 students with a Fort Wayne appetite.

鈥淚f you鈥檙e like me and you love Target, this one is the closest to 糖心传媒,鈥 she says. 鈥淚n the mall, it鈥檚 really fun to throw pennies into the fountain and ride on the carousel.鈥

Ladig says it鈥檚 not hard to find boba teas, good food, and frozen yogurt all over Fort Wayne, too.

鈥淔or a college student like me, it can be nice to get away from the stress and busyness of school,鈥 Ladig says. 鈥淣ot only is Fort Wayne the place that I grew up and lived my entire life, but it is also a place that has a neat history, beautiful art, and fun things to do.鈥

鈥淭here are a lot of unique shops I probably don鈥檛 even know about yet,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd most notably, we just got a Trader Joe鈥檚.鈥
