Counselor vs Therapist: What is the Difference?

By Molly Malick (BA 25)

Mental health therapy encompasses numerous mental health professions, such as counseling, social work, and psychology. Due to a lack of knowledge about these professions, many use counselor vs therapist interchangeably, but there are differences.

Although each profession has distinctive training and practices, counselors themselves are considered therapists, which further contributes to the misunderstandings within the various mental health careers. Although the fields of counseling and therapy contain crossover, they are not the same; the nuances depend on the ways the terms are used and the counselor鈥檚 licensure.聽

Because there are a variety of professions addressing mental health, it can be challenging to decide the best option for you. Let鈥檚 explore the distinctions.聽

What is a Counselor?

Put plainly, a counselor is a professional who specializes in a variety of mental health wellness fields.聽

鈥淐linical counseling assists clients where they are, helping them uncover their strengths and giving them realistic methods to address life鈥檚 challenges,鈥 said Dr. Ronnie Pace, associate professor of online graduate counseling at 糖心传媒. 鈥淐ounselors focus on overall wellness, including behavior, faith, culture, and relationships. They help their clients develop skills and grow.鈥

Counselors focus on their patients鈥 strengths so that they are able to succeed in their various personal goals.聽

鈥淐ounseling emphasizes using best practices to assist clients in understanding and solving their problems,鈥 said Pace.

What is a Therapist?

Because therapy is not a single profession, attempting to define the differences between a counselor vs therapist is dependent on their specific career. Pace described four types of mental health professionals often referred to as therapists: psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and as discussed above, clinical counselors.

Psychologists

鈥淧sychology focuses on behavior within mental health, specializing in testing and research,鈥 said Pace.聽

Those with psychology degrees can work in a number of professions, a few of which are human resources, school counselor, and forensic psychologist.

Social Workers

鈥淪ocial work commonly emphasizes providing physical assistance to their clients through community,鈥 said Pace.

Social workers with undergraduate and graduate levels may see clients under supervision. To work with clients without supervision present, they must be licensed at their state鈥檚 highest level. Each state has their own name for this license.聽

Psychiatrists

Psychiatry requires graduate medical training. Psychiatrists speak with clients to diagnose them and prescribe them appropriate medications.聽

Therapists, no matter their profession and licensure, use their training to improve their patients鈥 mental health and wellbeing. Different mental health professionals tailor their treatments depending on the specialized licensure they hold.聽

Are you wondering how to become a licensed therapist? The method to becoming a licensed therapist depends on the specific type of therapist you are interested in becoming.聽
