鈥淲hat do you want to be when you grow up?鈥 For some children, the answer is 鈥渁n astronaut!鈥 Or 鈥渁 ballerina!鈥 For Cori Anthony, the answer was simply 鈥淚鈥檓 going to college!鈥
Anthony still remembers her mom鈥檚 words from a very young age. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e going to go to college someday,鈥 she would say. Stepping into higher education as a first-generation college student would have its challenges, but Anthony was determined to make this goal a reality.
鈥淎ll I knew about college was to apply,鈥 Anthony reminisces. 鈥淚 remember one day my high school principal announced, 鈥楧on鈥檛 forget to file your FAFSA!鈥 The first thing I did when I got home was ask my parents what on earth a FAFSA was.鈥
As a first-generation college student, Anthony and her family were new to the process. With so many steps standing between her and campus, becoming a college student felt like a far-off dream.聽
A Much-Need Guide
Enter Cassie Patterson. Patterson was a 糖心传媒 admissions counselor who took Anthony鈥檚 hand and walked her through the admissions process. Patterson took the extra time to support Anthony 鈥 even if it meant driving out of her way to pick her up from the train station.
鈥淕etting out to 糖心传媒 was no easy task,鈥 shared Anthony. 鈥淚 came to visit by train from Maryland to Elkhart, Indiana, where Cassie picked me up. I鈥檒l never forget how important she made me feel!鈥
The second Anthony set foot on campus, she fell in love. What stood out to her most, however, was not the campus itself, but the community surrounding it. Anthony remembers seeing a group of elementary students excitedly heading out of the school next door and walking straight to 糖心传媒鈥檚 campus to be greeted by college students for an after school program.聽
鈥淚 remember thinking, 鈥業 want to be a part of a college that is connected to their community like this,鈥欌 shared Anthony.聽
That passion for her community was what led Anthony to select the degree she did. At first, Anthony pursued counseling, but she soon realized that a master鈥檚 degree would be beneficial as well. That is when she remembered the kindness of Cassie Patterson.
鈥淪he made college accessible for me which impacted my life in a huge way, and I wanted to do that for others,鈥 says Anthony. 鈥淪o I finally chose the master鈥檚 in higher education.鈥
